Minutes before she boarded the ill-fated flight MH17 in Amsterdam, Malaysia Airlines stewardess Angeline Premila Rajendran texted her family, asking them to look after her dog.
The 30-year-old animal lover told her family: "Look after my dog Lexi. Her brother Murphy Govind, 29, called her the pet's "mother", The Star reported today.
Murphy said their distraught mother had gone into shock and has locked herself in the bedroom since being informed of the tragedy early Friday morning.
"My mum is devastated as Angeline and the rest of us celebrated her birthday only two weeks ago,” he was quoted as saying by the daily, adding that Angeliene was the only daughter.
Speaking from their home in Bukit Tinggi 2, Murphy said the family was notified by Malaysia Airlines via a phone call at 4am on Friday, that the flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur had not landed.
“It did not make any sense because the flight was supposed to land only at 6am,” he was reported as saying.
Only after a friend, who also worked for MAS, told them what had really happened, did the severity of the incident sink in.
Flight MH17 flew out of Amsterdam on Thursday, then crashed near the Ukrainian-Russian border last night, killing all 298 passengers and crew.
The plane was shot down by a surface-to-air missile allegedly fired by pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine.
Angeline's close friend, Annette Roman Vermani, was reported as saying that the two had planned to meet up soon after speaking to each other a few weeks back.
“Now it will never happen,” said Annette, a former flight attendant.
The two friends last met in March when Annette took her newborn child to meet Angeline.
Angeline, she said, was a good-natured, prim and proper person, who modelled for the national carrier, mostly for magazines, and involved herself in airlines activities. – July 19, 2014.
