KOTA KINABALU: Two final-year Universiti Malaysia Sabah students were killed instantly after their vehicle was involved in a collision with an express bus in Menggatal on Sunday.
The death of 23-year-old Shazwan Hazlami Sharidzuan from Sandakan, and Norashila Abdullah, 23, from Miri, Sarawak, came just months before their convocation and engagement.
They succumbed to head and bodily injuries after an express bus carrying 38 passengers rammed the Perodua Viva they were travelling in at about 8pm.
Shazwan and Norashila planned to get engaged once they graduated from their Degree in Business Management in June, according to friends.
“They were both very committed to their studies and even planned to search for a job together after their convocation this September, and get engaged,” said a friend who wanted to be known only as Ajil when met at the Queen Elizabeth hospital on Monday.
Eyewitnesses said the express bus, which was heading to Tawau from the state capital, dragged the vehicle for about 200m before coming to a stop.
Many of its passengers chose to abandon their journey following the accident.
Meanwhile, Sabah Traffic and Public Order Chief Supt Ismadi Borhan said the police would be carrying out an operation soon to check on bus express drivers.
He said such incidents were serious and those who exceeded the speed limit would be given harsher punishment.
“We also need the cooperation from the public to report to the authorities if they come across reckless drivers on the road,” he said.
